1 John 1:1-2

1 John 1:1-2 Prologue of Apostolic Authority

 

(1.1) Ὃ ἦν ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς, ὃ ἀκηκόαμεν, ὃ ἑωράκαμεν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν, ὃ ἐθεασάμεθα καὶ αἱ χεῖρες ἡμῶν ἐψηλάφησαν, περὶ τοῦ λόγου τῆς ζωῆς— (2) καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ἐφανερώθη, καὶ ἑωράκαμεν καὶ μαρτυροῦμεν καὶ ἀπαγγέλλομεν ὑμῖν τὴν ζωὴν τὴν αἰώνιον ἥτις ἦν πρὸς τὸν πατέρα καὶ ἐφανερώθη ἡμῖν—

(1.1) That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, which we saw and our hands felt concerning the word of life—(2) and the life has been manifested and we have seen and we testify about it and we report to you the eternal life which was with the Father and has been manifested to us—

Lexical and Syntactic Notes

1:1-2 Christ is referred to as ζωὴ and λόγου is the message of Christ (Wallace, 327).

1:2 Φανερόω is being made manifest in the flesh (BDAG, 1048).

1:2 ἦν is a stative verb in that πρὸς is to be translated as with (Wallace, 359).
