1 John 2:7-9

1 John 2:7-9

(7) Beloved, I do not write you a new commandment, but an old commandment which you were having from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you heard. (8) Again I am writing you a new commandment, which is true in him and in you, that the darkness is passing away and the true light is shining already. (9) Whoever claims that he is in the light and hates is brother is still in darkness.

Lexical and Syntactic Notes:

2:7 ὃν ἠκούσατε is a relative pronoun clause describing “word” (see Wallace, 662); ἐντολὴν is anaphoric or art of precious reference (i.e. “this” vid lec 9.2)

2:8 all present verbs are static presents (see Wallace 522). Παλιν works adversaliy (ibid)

2:9 Contains another TSKS formation (similar to verse four; see Wallace, 275).
