Revelation 1:9-10

Revelation 1:9-10

9 I, John, your brother and fellow worker in the tribulation and kingdom and endurance in Jesus, came to be on the island which is called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 I came to be in the spirit on the Lord’s Day and heard behind me a great voice as from a trumpet.

Lexical and Syntactic Notes

  • ἐν Ἰησοῦ – locative in metaphorical sense (Matthewson, 9)
  • Ἰησοῦ at end of v.9 is objective genitive; or perhaps a mixture of both (Matthewson 9-10; NIGTC, 202).
  • ἐν πνεύματι – locative in metaphorical sense; most likely referring to Holy Spirit because Ez. 43:5 (Matthewson, 10)
  • σάλπιγγος – Genitive of source (Matthewson, 10)
